FromSoftware Director Miyazaki Comments on Game Series Nicknames

FromSoftware’s head, Hidetaka Miyazaki, recently shared his thoughts on the nicknames given to the studio’s games. While commonly referred to as the “Souls” series by fans, Miyazaki expressed his dislike for this label. He clarified that the studio’s games are more than just the “Souls” series and prefer not to be categorized as such. Additionally, the term “SoulsBorne,” another popular nickname, is also not favored by Miyazaki and his team.

Defining the Genre

Despite their aversion to the existing nicknames, Miyazaki acknowledged the common characteristics shared by FromSoftware’s games. He described them as dark fantasy third-person action games with a strong emphasis on melee combat and a sense of accomplishment. While Miyazaki refrained from outright criticizing the “Souls” or “SoulsBorne” labels, it is evident that he wants the games to be recognized for their unique qualities beyond these generic classifications.

In addition to discussing the nicknames for their games, Miyazaki touched upon the upcoming DLC for Elden Ring. Set to release on June 21, the DLC titled “Shadow of the Erdtree” is highly anticipated by the FromSoftware community. Not only is it expected to be the largest expansion from the studio to date, but it also aims to follow the tradition of delivering exceptional DLC packs seen in titles like Bloodborne and Dark Souls. Fans are eager to explore new content and challenges in the Elden Ring universe.

FromSoftware has built a reputation for creating challenging and immersive gaming experiences that resonate with players on a deep level. While Miyazaki may not be fond of the “Souls” series or “SoulsBorne” labels, the community’s passion for these games remains unwavering. As players eagerly await the release of the Elden Ring DLC, the studio continues to strive for excellence in delivering innovative gameplay and narrative experiences that captivate and engage audiences worldwide.

While Miyazaki and FromSoftware may have reservations about certain nicknames attached to their games, the essence of their creations remains unchanged. The upcoming Elden Ring DLC serves as a testament to the studio’s commitment to pushing boundaries and enriching the gaming landscape with unforgettable adventures. As players embark on new quests and unravel mysteries in the Elden Ring universe, the legacy of FromSoftware’s innovative game design and storytelling will continue to inspire and enthrall generations of gamers.
