Meta Expands Child Safety Features Amidst Allegations of Inappropriate Content

In light of recent reports exposing how Instagram and Facebook recommend content sexualizing children, Meta is announcing the expansion and enhancement of its child safety features. Despite facing criticism for its platforms’ mishandling of inappropriate content, Meta claims to be taking concerted action to protect kids.

Over the past few months, The Wall Street Journal has extensively covered how Instagram and Facebook have been platforms for inappropriate and sexual child-related content. These reports have highlighted instances of Instagram facilitating a network involved in buying and selling child sexual abuse material (CSAM) and Facebook Groups harboring pedophile accounts and groups, some of which had up to 800,000 members. Meta’s recommendation system played a significant role in connecting these abusive accounts by suggesting connections through features like Facebook’s “Groups You Should Join” and autofilling hashtags on Instagram.

Meta recently announced several measures to tackle these issues head-on. Firstly, Meta will impose limitations on how adult accounts flagged as “suspicious” can interact with one another on Instagram. These accounts will no longer be able to follow one another, receive recommendations, or have their comments visible to other “suspicious” accounts.

Additionally, Meta has expanded its list of terms, phrases, and emojis related to child safety. By implementing machine learning technology, Meta aims to identify and flag connections between different search terms that could potentially relate to illicit content involving minors. These efforts seem to be a step in the right direction, albeit long overdue.

As reports of inappropriate content on Meta’s platforms continue to emerge, both US and EU regulators are placing increased pressure on the company to prioritize child safety. In January 2024, Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg, along with other Big Tech executives, will testify before the Senate on the issue of online child exploitation.

Moreover, EU regulators have given Meta a deadline to provide information about its efforts to protect minors, specifically addressing concerns related to the circulation of self-generated child sexual abuse material (SG-CSAM) on Instagram and the platform’s recommendation system. While Meta has yet to respond to this request, the company must act swiftly and transparently to address these concerns.

The reports of inappropriate content have had ripple effects beyond Meta’s platforms. In late November, prominent dating app companies, Bumble and Match, suspended their advertising on Instagram following The Wall Street Journal’s exposé. Their decision came after discovering that their ads were being displayed alongside explicit content and Reels videos that sexualized children. These incidents have exposed the urgent need for Meta and other social media platforms to effectively eliminate such disturbing material from their networks.

Meta’s latest announcement regarding the expansion and improvement of its child safety features is a step towards addressing the mounting concerns and criticisms surrounding its platforms. However, the timing of these initiatives, amidst ongoing investigations and regulatory scrutiny, raises questions about the company’s commitment to the safety of minors using its services. It is imperative that Meta follows through on its promises, collaborates transparently with regulators, and takes swift action to ensure the protection of children from inappropriate and harmful content.
