The Future of AI in the Automotive Sector: Intel’s Game Plan

Intel’s latest offering is the “first-generation AI-enhanced software-defined vehicle system-on-chip.” This AI-focused chip is designed specifically for the automotive sector and promises to enhance various aspects of the in-car experience, such as navigation, voice assistants, and vehicle controls. Jack Weast, vice president and general manager of Intel Automotive, emphasized the significance of this development, stating that Intel is bringing the power of AI to cars. However, he acknowledged that simply integrating a personal computer into a vehicle is not sufficient. Automakers need to re-architect their vehicles to be software-defined, thus enabling the full potential of Intel’s AI chips.

Intel aims to introduce a “family” of systems-on-a-chip (SoCs) for future software-defined vehicles (SDVs). These SDVs will leverage Intel’s AI-enhanced chips and enable features like advanced voice assistants, improved video conferencing capabilities, and even video gaming options for rear-seat passengers. The company’s vision is to make technology less obtrusive and more seamlessly integrated into the driving experience. Furthermore, Intel is actively engaging with original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) to promote the adoption of its AI chips in upcoming vehicle models. Zeekr, the EV subbrand of China’s Geely, is the first company to partner with Intel in installing these chips in their vehicles.

Challenges in Building Software-Defined Vehicles

The company has acquired Silicon Mobility SAS, a fabless automotive silicon and software company specializing in EV energy management. This acquisition aims to facilitate the transition from heavy, expensive, and mineral-rich batteries to lighter and more manageable alternatives. Intel envisions a future where EVs offer the same or better range with lighter battery packs, reducing their overall weight and environmental impact.

To further aid the development of electric vehicles, Intel is working with SAE International to establish a new committee focused on creating a standardized framework for EV power management. This collaborative effort aims to address the challenges associated with battery size and energy management. As batteries are currently the heaviest and most expensive element of vehicles, the goal is to identify solutions that minimize weight and cost while maximizing efficiency and range. By leading this committee, Intel demonstrates its commitment to driving innovation in the clean transportation sector.
