AMD’s Impressive New Mobile Processors: A Game-Changer for Gamers

AMD is gearing up to launch its latest mobile processors, and the buzz around their performance is reaching new heights. One of the most exciting revelations is the introduction of the Radeon 890M GPU, which promises a significant improvement over the previous 780M. The 890M, part of the new AMD Ryzen AI 300-series, boasts 16 RDNA 3.5 CUs running at 2,900 MHz. In comparison, the older 780M had just 12 RDNA 3 CUs at 2,800 MHz. These numbers alone indicate a substantial jump in performance, but recent benchmarks have reinforced this expectation.

Benchmarks conducted by GPD on their GPD Duo device, equipped with an AMD Ryzen AI 9 HX 370, have shed light on the impressive performance of the 890M. The GPD Duo scored 4,221 in 3DMark Time Spy at 54W, showcasing a 31% performance increase over the 780M which scored 3,218 on the GPD Win Max 2. Notably, the 890M even outperformed a discrete RTX 2050 and came close to matching an RTX 3050, both running at higher wattages. This accomplishment is particularly remarkable considering the 890M is an integrated GPU competing with dedicated graphics cards.

In addition to the GPU upgrade, the AMD Ryzen AI 300-series introduces Zen 5 and Zen 5c cores, elevating the overall processing capabilities of these mobile processors. GPD’s tests in Cinebench 2024 revealed impressive single-thread and multithread performance that rivals higher-end Ryzen processors. The Ryzen 890M managed to achieve a single-thread score on par with the Ryzen 9 7950X and a multithreaded score comparable to the Ryzen 9 5950X, setting a new standard for mobile processing power.

While these initial benchmarks are promising, it’s essential to await the arrival of laptops featuring these powerful processors to assess their real-world performance comprehensively. The potential adoption of the AMD Ryzen 890M in gaming handhelds could signify a major performance boost without compromising battery life. Additionally, the emergence of the 12-core 880M introduces another intriguing possibility for high-performance mobile computing.

AMD’s latest mobile processors, spearheaded by the Radeon 890M GPU, are poised to redefine the gaming and mobile computing landscape. With impressive benchmark results, including a substantial performance increase over the previous generation and competitive performance against discrete graphics cards, AMD is setting a new standard for mobile processing power. As we await the official release of laptops featuring these processors, the excitement and anticipation for the next evolution in mobile computing only continue to grow.
