The woman in question tried to pass the airport’s checks with the Nintendo Switch cartridges hidden in her bra. Reports suggest that she appeared nervous and exhibited abnormal behavior, prompting officials to pull her aside for further questioning. The total value of the 350 cartridges was estimated to be a staggering 70,000 yuan, which is approximately £7,600 or $9,600.
Smuggling any undeclared goods through customs is strictly prohibited in most nations, including China. According to China’s General Administration of Customs, if the cartridges are not considered prohibited items, they will be confiscated. Additionally, the individual may face a fine of up to three times the amount of duties payable but evaded. The repercussions of such actions can be severe, as highlighted by the potential penalties.
While this incident may seem unusual due to the method of smuggling, it is not the first time that customs officials have intercepted Nintendo-related goods. In recent years, there have been cases of fake Pokémon cards and figurines being seized at customs checkpoints. For instance, 7.6 tons of counterfeit Pokémon cards were confiscated in 2021 before reaching Europe, and in 2020, 86,000 fake Pokémon figurines suffered the same fate.
