The New Face of FidelityFX Super Resolution 3.1

Three months after the announcement of the FidelityFX Super Resolution (FSR) 3.1 update, several Sony games have now been patched to incorporate the new system. Ghost of Tsushima, Horizon Forbidden West, Ratchet and Clank: Rift Apart, and the two Spider-Man games have all received enhancements in the form of an improved shader-based upscaler and decoupled frame generation. This upgrade aims to provide a boost in performance for PC gamers while delivering better-looking results compared to the previous version.

One of the significant improvements in FSR 3.1 is the enhanced shader algorithm for the upscaler. AMD claims that the new system offers improved temporal stability, reduced flickering and shimmering, enhanced ghosting reduction, and better detail preservation compared to the previous version. This improvement addresses the visual quality issues that some users may have experienced with the older upscaler, bringing FSR closer to Nvidia’s DLSS Super Resolution in terms of performance and quality.

Decoupled Frame Generator

Another noteworthy feature introduced in FSR 3.1 is the decoupled frame generator. In previous versions, users were limited to using AMD’s frame interpolator with its shader-based upscaler. With the new update, games like Ghost of Tsushima have successfully implemented the separation of the frame generator and upscaler, allowing graphics cards from different manufacturers to run their own upscalers while utilizing AMD’s frame generator. This flexibility opens up new possibilities for PC gamers looking to optimize their gaming experience.

With the full release of FSR 3.1, more games have been patched to integrate the new system. Titles such as Horizon Forbidden West, Ratchet and Clank, Spider-Man Remastered, and Spider-Man: Miles Morales have all been updated to leverage the improved features of FSR 3.1. Additionally, the upcoming port of God of War: Ragnarok is expected to join the list of games utilizing the new version. AMD has also made efforts to streamline the FSR software package for developers and has added support for Vulkan and the Xbox platform, paving the way for wider adoption of FSR 3.1 in future game releases.
